Delphiniums
These long columns of vibrant purple blossoms attract butterflies and bees and create a cottage garden look. Hybrids are annuals, but native species are perennials at 1–6 feet.
Hyacinths
These bulbs bloom fragrant, bell-shaped flowers in March and April when planted in the autumn. They flourish in USDA Zones 4-8 and benefit from winter cold.
Sweet Peas
Cottage gardens need sweet peas with delicate, colourful blossoms on tall, twisting stems. These cooler climate plants grown in October or after the last frost need good soil.
Fan Flowers
Australian native Scaevola are perfect for filling outdoor containers, especially hanging baskets. They thrive in full light and summer heat, making them ideal annuals outside Zones 10 and 11.
Summer Phlox
This hardy perennial is popular with butterflies and hummingbirds due to its vivid blossoms. Plant them in Zones 4-8 with good air circulation to minimise mildew at the end of the blooming season.
Anemones
Their variety of forms and sizes makes them great border plants or cut flowers. Specific species bloom early spring to October. Plant in autumn for spring flowers or after the last frost in temperate climates.
Clematis
A climbing vine known for brightening vertical garden settings. Clematis 'Jackmanii' blooms beautifully from late spring to summer, but it needs wet soil and monthly liquid fertiliser.
American Wisteria
A lovely vine for Zones 5-9 in full to partial light. Native Kentucky wisteria grows slowly; prune annually. Grown, they tolerate dryness and produce fragrant flowers.
